1942
Mediums: tempera, fabric.
Location: The Tate Modern Gallery, London (the UK).
Shown in 1947 at the International Exhibition of Contemporary Art in Cairo, the painting was painted five years earlier in Buxton, Derbyshire. In the late period of his creative career, the artist remained faithful both to his central theme and the most common method of combining still life and landscape in one work. Wadsworth uses a frontally deployed compositional construction and a low horizon, which allows you to place accents – it is the mast with signal flags that attracts the viewer’s attention. The artist balances the cold colour palette of the sky and the sea with the warm colours of various objects.
