The artist created this picture during his stay in Arles. As everyone knows, van Gogh cut off his ear in a fit of insanity, after fighting with his friend, Paul Gauguin. In this picture the artist’s facial features are distorted. At the time of creating the picture he was only 35 years old. However, he looks much older.
