Self-portrait with a chestnut flower

author

Tatyana Glebova

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: The Museum of Fine Arts of the Republic of Karelia (Petrozavodsk, Russia).

Self-portraits occupy a separate niche in the artist’s work. Depicting herself, Tatyana Glebova often experimented with various painting techniques and materials. Three of her famous self-portraits were created in the 1930s. One of them, probably earlier, since the exact date of its creation is unknown, depicts the artist in a realistic manner, while “Self-portrait with a chestnut flower” is made in a modernist technique, in a more generalized and emotional manner. This is the darkest and most pessimistic self-portrait, in which the strict expression on the face and tightly compressed lips of the artist speak about the inner emotional tension of the author.
