1947
Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: The State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow (Russia).
The canvas resembles the artist’s earlier work “The Sorceress – Winter” (1912). A snowy forest, an abundance of hoarfrost on the branches, a light haze through which the sun is trying to break through. The fresh whiteness of the earth’s winter outfit is highlighted by pale purple and greenish shades. As usual, the presence of houses and people (in this picture also horses with a rider) conveys not a fleeting impression, but a stable image of the inhabited earth and the nature of the artist’s motherland. Everything here looks bright and poetic, and therefore joyful. Surprisingly, the artist did not lose his happy mood in 35 years that passed after he created the first painting.
