Rothko Chapel

author

Mark Rothko

description

Medium: oil on canvas.
Location: the University of St. Thomas, Houston, USA.

The building resembling a chapel, in which Mark Rothko placed his canvases, was designed specially for him. The artist himself controlled the building process to make the space corresponded to his idea. On the walls of the room, he placed 14 of his works of a very large scale. All of them are created in dark red-brown and black-gray colors, which were typical of Rothko’s painting in his late period. The building was created for money of art patrons John and Dominique de Menila; however, unfortunately, the artist did not live to see the opening of the chapel.
