Ancient fossils became the main theme of the artist’s work in 1960s. The surface of the canvas has a dense, solid structure, which creates the effect of a stone or earth during a drought. The artist created such texture by adding different substances into the paint: clay, sand, glue and colorful pigment. Gloomy and slightly sinister works, the series “Fossils” consist of several large half-geometrical forms and resemble desert landscapes of dreams or empty moon surfaces. The laminated structure of the canvas allows creating a certain volume not only with the help of picturesque light and shade but also by carving and scratching the surface of the canvas.
