1959
Medium: oil, acrylic, tempera on canvas.
Location: Tate Modern, London, GB.
The painting belongs to the cycle “Panel for Seagram”, within which the artist created more than 30 canvases. Initially, it was an order for the elite restaurant “Four seasons”, the owners of which offered Rothko a very good money award for his work. Nevertheless, the paintings did not get into the restaurant, as the artist did not want to place his works at the place for the “fat cats”. He returned the deposit to the customer and placed his work at the Tate Gallery in London, where there was a separate room for them. Describing these paintings, Rothko said that he created not paintings, but a whole space that could completely immerse a person in a separately existing world.
