A short prayer in gratitude to God for the food that people get is traditional before a meal in the Philippines. In this painting, the peculiar character of Manansala’s cubism manifested itself most vividly. The multiple planes of the dwelling and the figures of family members, a peacefully sleeping white cat are intertwined into a single mosaic, creating a harmonious picture of a very modest family dinner. The central character is the mother in a red dress (accent spot of the canvas), sitting with her back to the viewer with a baby in her arms. The viewer does not see the baby itself – only the legs and the dark crown of the head. This unexpected angle leads to several thoughts: the child is sleeping or, possibly, sick. The amazingly powerful work is one of the best creations of the artist.
