1917
Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: The Folkwang Museum (Essen, Germany).
The artist met Vincent Nubiola at the School of Fine Arts of Barcelona, where he studied from 1913. In the portrait, the teacher is depicted sitting at a table and thoughtfully smoking a pipe. The collar of his shirt is unfastened, and his pose is natural and calm; only tense nervous hands and a heap of bright geometric figures in the background create expression and dynamics in the picture. The portrait is a striking example of Miro’s experiments with cubism and fauvism in the early period of his work. In the same year, the artist created several more portraits in a similar style, one of which is a self-portrait in the same shirt as Nubiola’s.
