Portrait of the Guard Colonel-General V.I. Chuikov

author

Yevgeny Vuchetich

description

Mediums: marble.
Location: The State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow (Russia).

Vuchetich, creating sculptural portraits of heroes immediately after the war, each time sought to give an original compositional solution that would help to reveal the individuality of the depicted person. He created Chuikov as a simple but internally meaningful image. With fine modeling of facial features (it is apparent that he knew such properties of marble as substantial black-and-white effects), the block of stones at the edges remained poorly processed. The role of decorative details in the work is minimized. The viewer’s attention is directed precisely to the expressive face of the hero. The work was awarded the Stalin Prize of the second degree.
