This is a portrait of Marquis Guido di Girolamo Sommi Picenardi of Lombard, born in Menton, in 1892 to the Knight of the Order of Malta. He was one of Lempicka’s lovers. The man’s fashion is typical of the 1920s, which were described as “crazy years”: short shiny hair and a wide-lapel jacket. French artist Maurice Denis called this style “Synthetic Cubism”, because of the unexpected mixture that the artist developed between Neo-Cubism and Renaissance Mannerism.
