Writer A. N. Tikhonov-Serebrov depicted in a manner close to realistic was famous in the history of literature as the closest friend of Maxim Gorky, whose graphic portrait is in the famous album of Annenkov. The work confirms the author’s enthusiasm for Dadaism with its passion for the collage technique: Annenkov attached glass to the layers of oil paints and also used a stucco mixture. Moreover, he attached a real electric doorbell to the canvas. The painting became one of the most expensive creations of Russian avant-garde artists (the 30th one on the list) when it was sold for 2.26 million dollars (2007, Christie auction).
