1911
Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow (Russia).
The canvas was included in the series of paintings with the provisional name “Peacocks”, which were created under the influence of the style of rayonism as a type of semi-abstract painting using the methods of the naive art. The work combines the laws of the art of Ancient Egypt and the traditions of Russian popular print. According to the canons of the Egyptian drawing, the tail of the bird is turned frontally, and its graceful neck, chiselled head and magnificent crest are depicted in profile – it seems that it is admiring the grandiose architectural structure of feathers – its tail. The whole figure of the peacock, symbolizing immortality in mythology, exudes not refined luxury, as it is found in the paintings by representatives of Art Nouveau, but primordial energy, expressed in radiant colours.
