Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: The State Tretyakov Gallery (Moscow, Russia).
The famous canvas was created in the manner of neo-primitivism. A white horse that looks like a toy horse, colourful houses, a fence, trees and mounds of cultivated land are depicted as they are usually painted by naive artists and children. A disproportionately small peasant woman with a yoke emphasizes the central figure – a peasant wiping sweat from his forehead. All three characters (the man, the horse and the woman) are compositionally located along the diagonal observed by the viewer. The artist used super-bright colours for a red shirt and blue ploughman trousers. These colours in their shades are repeated in the surrounding landscape, and the blue sky with white clouds completes the colour harmony.
