On the balcony

author

Berthe Morisot

description

Mediums: pencil, watercolor, paper.
Location: Art Institute of Chicago.

In this picture we see a fashionably dressed woman and her daughter, looking at a bustling city. Railings have a symbolic meaning in this work; for Moriso, a railing acts as a barrier between internal detention in homes, the so-called female space, and freedom outside the house, the so-called male space.
