Glass tube and neon.
In parallel with his experiments in the field of painting, Lucio Fontana created conceptual things, such as “Neon Structure.” It is a tortuous composition of a lighted neon tube. With this work, the artist wanted to achieve two goals. Firstly, to use the inventions of science in the visual arts; secondly, to place the viewer in one space with the work and allow him to become a participant in the ongoing action. The installation is located on the ceiling and is the only source of light in the room, which forces visitors to raise their heads and disorient them in the surrounding space. This work, as well as other paintings by Spatialists, influenced the development of such modern art movements as Environmentalism, Performance and Arte Povera.
