During the war, Isamu Noguchi spent seven months at a Japanese internment camp in Arizona, where he organized a small creative colony of immigrants. He volunteered to go there in protest against racism and the negative attitude of Americans towards citizens of Japanese descent. During this period, the sculptor created several interesting works from natural materials, including My Pacific, which he carved from a snag found on the shore. The sculptor said that natural forms and materials inspire him to create new works, make him experiment, try his hand in different styles, constantly seek new artistic solutions and opportunities.
