Tchelitchew met the Gorer family in 1926 in Paris. The English people, the mother and her three sons, became close friends of the young artist. In particular, they helped a lot with preparing for the show at the Claridge Gallery when Pavel fell ill and was unable to attend it. The middle-aged lady (at the time of the creation of the portrait she was 57) sits in a deep Voltaire armchair, her hands folded on her lap. The pale palette of the whole work is also calm: simple clothes, warm background and diffused lighting from the invisible window.
