description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: Weinstein Gallery San Francisco (the USA).

The culture and customs of Mexico, where the artist lived for several decades, made a strong impression on him. A mixture of Latin American folk traditions with elements of ancient Native American cultures was reflected in his later paintings. Performed with separate mosaic strokes, the painting “Mexican Holiday” depicts several large figures bending over a ritual object in the center of the composition. Unlike the artist’s earlier works, where fragile moving structures resemble ghosts, these characters are pretty solid and static. The warm colours characteristic of Mexican art create a particular flavour of the picture and make it look like a work of folk art.
