Linear Construction No. 2

author

Naum Gabo

description

Mediums: plastic, nylon threads.
Location: Tate Gallery, London (the UK).

This work exists in more than twenty standing and hanging versions. A luminiferous nylon thread is around intersecting thin irregularly shaped planes. This solution gives the viewer a sense of intricate patterns in three dimensions. Initially, such a model was developed back in the late 1940s for an unrealized interior design for the Esso building in New York. This was one of Gabo’s favorite works, and he performed variations of this design. One of them was made in memory of his friend, art historian G. Reed and was presented to London by the author himself.
