Lament Over the Cosmic Egg

author

Ernst Fuchs

description

Mediums: wood, tempera, oil and glaze.
Location: private collection.

The allegoric scene combines the nude genre with mythological monumental painting and modern interpretation of ideas about the creation of the world. The abundance of details and bright colors in Fuchs’ works in this very early period (the author of the painting was almost 18 at that time) resemble works of Jheronimus Bosch, whose famous triptych “The Last Judgment” is at the Vienna academy. The composition is visually divided into three parts horizontally; the very dark sea divides the pink ground and the bright sky. Also, three parts are seen in two vertical female figures and the Egg placed between them.
