Cassat depicted her aunt Mary Dickinson Riddle, presiding over tea. The portrait demonstrates the sitter’s indifference to the viewer. Mrs. Riddle’s daughter disliked the portrait. That is why Cassatt kept it until Louisine Havemeyer persuaded her to give it to The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
