The monochrome black-and-gray canvas depicts four amorphous figures who seem fascinated by the contemplation of a cloud of smoke or a light shadow located in the center of the picture. Who these figures are, and what they observe, as well as what the strange name means, remains a mystery. An interesting fact is that the work was acquired by Freud’s pupil Carl Jung; also, it was this painting that inspired the scientist to create the famous theory of the “collective unconscious”. Thus, the work demonstrates the direct connection between psychoanalysis and surrealism, their interpenetration and influence on each other.
