Hog

author

Pavel Filonov

description

Mediums: oil, paper.
Location: The State Russian Museum, St. Petersburg (Russia).

The work is created in a style close to the popular print, which is most harmonious for such topics. Filonov’s neo-primitivism is special: in addition to the brightness of the palette and large objects inherent in this art movement, there is irony in his manner. The main “character”, a hog with sad doom, awaits death, while the faces of two people who are about to stab the animal look the most atrocious. At the same time, the depicted man is in a shirt with strange large multi-colored roses. The movement is expressed not only by the energetic swings of large knives, but also by the general diagonal tilt of the whole composition.
