The artist’s style was distinguished by unusually strong creative energy. Despite all the hardships and disappointments, he continued to work until he got very old; in particular, he depicted his favourite cityscapes. In the last years of his life, gas meters – special stationary gas storage tanks that are no longer in use, attracted Sironi’s attention. Like huge monsters of steel and brick, they hang over the city complementing the already gloomy landscape with a sense of threat and pressure. A man riding a bicycle that goes by a gas meter seems insignificantly small compared to this ugly industrial building.
