1955
Mediums: pure pigment and synthetic resin on a board.
Location: the private collection of Rotraut Klein, Paris (France).
Initially, Klein’s monochrome was multicoloured. However, he was discouraged by the desire of the audience to find semantic relationships between paintings of different colours and started using only blue. The orange monochrome was rejected by the jury of the Paris Salon, which presented abstraction to the public. According to Klein’s recollections, the refusal was motivated as follows, “This is not enough … If the author agrees to add at least a small line, or a dot, or even a spot of a different colour, we could accept the work … But only one solid colour, no, no, that’s not enough; it is impossible!” The author refused to change anything, adhering to his concept. The rectangular wood panel is evenly coated with matte orange paint, dated on the front side “May 55” and signed with the monogram YK. The author did not put any mysterious meaning in the work.
