1938
Medium: oil on canvas.
Style: expressionism.
It is in a private collection of Kate Rothko.
This early work of the figurative period reflects the attitude of the artist to New York, which always seemed to him a soulless and joyless city. In this painting, the influence of Post-impressionism is noticeable; schematically depicted figures and architectural elements are presented in the form of color planes filled with a single color. The mood of the picture, despite the bright colors, seems dull. The faces of people are flat, while the environment is quite tense. The people standing at the turnstile resemble overseers, blocking the entrance to an isolated room.
