In the paintings of the artist’s last period, when he returned to the style of surrealism and genre of symbolism after a long break, the same motives of the serene sea prevail. Its surface is calm, but it also has mystery, which is reflected in the name of the canvas. The fragile islet is “inhabited” by two figures – a realistically depicted girl and a kind of phantom growing from a giant shell. However, both characters sculpturally looming against a cloudy sky are subject to the force of a strong wind. References to antiquity and the artist’s favourite chess game complement the fantastic episode.
