About the painting:
The author of this painting said about the contemplation of the stormy night near the French Lugano, “In the shortest moment of the flash, the fantastic nudity of a dead chestnut emerged. It was a really naked body. Instant bright light created another world.” Impressed by this dazzling vision, Sima created several scetches and paintings on the theme of a double landscape. They were presented at the first exhibition of the artist at the gallery Povolozky in Paris in 1929. The painting rather creates the impression of a dream than of what Josef actually saw. Therefore, its meaning is primarily metaphysical: a metaphor of knowledge that unites several levels of reality.
