Cyclops

author

Eduardo Luigi Paolozzi

description

The Tate Gallery, London (the UK).

Bronze.

Eduardo Paolozzi made the mythological character Cyclops, who was huge and had one eye in the middle of his forehead, from parts of various mechanisms. The combination of a humanoid figure and mechanical elements is a frequent occurrence in the work of the artist, who thus expressed his attitude to technological progress. Paolozzi pressed metal objects into the clay mass, combining them differently; when he was satisfied with the result, he filled the element with wax. Having a sufficient number of wax casts, the artist put them together and made a bronze figure that resembles a rusty and crumbling robot and suggests that cars are aging and dying just like people.
