description

Harlem, New York, the USA.

Graffiti.

To create one of his most famous works, the graffiti “Crack is Madness”, Keith Haring chose an abandoned handball court in Harlem. The wall attracted him because it was visible from the nearby busy highway and looked almost like a roadside banner. Without asking anyone for permission, he brought paints and a ladder and finished the work in one day. After that, the city authorities forced the artist to pay a fine of $ 25 for vandalism. Though, when unknown hooligans damaged the drawing, the same city authorities asked Kit Haring to restore its original appearance.

The graffiti mural on a street in New York, made in black and orange, warns of the dangers of the impact of strong drugs on the human body. “Crack” is the jargon name for cocaine in the form of crystals, the use of which is very addictive. Keith Haring himself in his youth used various prohibited substances, and made sure how destructive their effect on people is. His work is designed to prevent and stop the spread of drugs among American youth; it is dedicated to the work of his friend, artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, who died from drug poisoning.
