This still-life is an example of the late period of Kahlo’s creative career. In this genre, she worked throughout her life, depicting objects, fruits and vegetables found in Mexico. Unlike the cornucopia tradition that represents a rich life, the coconuts in Kahlo’s painting cry, complaining of the dualism of life and death. A small Mexican flag bearing an affectionate and personal inscription with the meaning “with love, Frida Kahlo” is stuck in a green fruit. The anthropomorphism of the fruits in this composition symbolizes the projection of Kahlo’s pain – her health deteriorated; the doses of drugs that helped alleviate her suffering increased, and her still lifes gradually became less detailed and less cheerful.
