The canvas of the pre-surreal period was designed as a detailed landscape and architectural panorama. The artist used cubism in the depiction of objects and in creating the background. However, this is not an aggressive geometric style, but the buildings as a whole have a real look, not divided into segments. The high horizon does not interfere with the distinctive contours of the church and the high cross. Styrsky put dramatic shadows on them with the help of cubist elements. The artist depicted trees in a primitive style. His palette during this period is in soft but contrasting blue and brown tones.
