description

The Museum of Modern Art, New York (the USA).

Lithography.

In the early 1960s, in parallel with the creation of many cycles of paintings, Newman also worked on etchings and lithographs. Among them is the series “Cantos”, which has 18 works. This is the only series of printed works made in colour. Newman said that these works are analogues of musical creations. “Their symphonic mass gives additional clarity to each song,” the author wrote in the introduction to the series. In each of 18 works, Frank Newman used a wide off-center stripe, as well as variations from thinner “zippers”. It allows colours to merge in the fields, testing the idea of the absence of spatial boundaries. The artist noted in the article that each of the songs has “personal fields”.
