The personal collection of the artist.
Mixed media on canvas.
The picture from the series “Imaginary Places” was created by Frank Stella based on the book “Dictionary of Imaginary Places” by Alberto Manguel and Gianni Guadalupi. The source was compiled in the form of a guide, but the paintings of the series are not just illustrations for this guide since these compositions are composed, in particular, from the artist’s earlier works. In this sense, they represent a reference book of the art of the painter-innovator himself. This painting combines several pictorial and graphic techniques, as well as large fragments. These objects visually give the work a general look of the collage. The abstract composition has a certain relief and somewhat resembles a bird’s eye view of a modern city.
