This work depicts a nude female and a scantily dressed female bather on a picnic with two fully dressed men in a rural setting. The style of the painting runs counter to the academic traditions of that time. Sharp “photographic” light eliminates halftones. Manet did not try to hide brush strokes, and the picture therefore looks unfinished in some places.
