In his works of the first Cubist period, Styrsky used both landscape and portrait-plot genre. Almost always, the figures of people were left without facial features and had a “link” to social status or personal characteristics. The fact that the author kept the epithet “black” in the name is not an accident. The viewer sees both the red silhouette of the figure and the elements of white and gray colours – there are more of them in total than the black details of the composition. However, the title implies the tragic personality of Pierrot. This is particularly emphasized by the frivolous décor of the curtain in the style of art nouveau.
