1927 - 1928
Mediums: oil, wood.
Location: The Tate Modern Gallery, London (the UK).
Lewis made this wood interior panel for his cabinet at his London studio in Ossington Street. The theme and title of the work resemble the story “Caliph Design” that Lewis published in 1919. Upward looking objects – a stylized spiral staircase, sculptures similar to idols, part of the garden – are combined with abstract elements “woven” into the overall composition. Bright in colour, and therefore a very decorative work was created based on a series of abstract drawings made by Lewis in the previous two years.
