description

Location: The Museum of Modern Art, New York (the USA).

The extraordinary friendship between the three geniuses – A. Derain, A. Giacometti and the author of this portrait began in the 1930s. They were brought together by their respect for the figurative tradition and forms of “primitive” art and the fact that they, having passed surrealistic circles, went their own original ways. Derain and Balthus modernized the theme of sleeping, resting, or thinking about something – each of them tried to depict a plot-state between fantasy and experienced experience in his way. Derain, whose portrait resemblance is not in doubt, is depicted in his working space at the time of thinking about the plan and in the presence of a model waiting for him.
