1989
Mediums: sandstone, powder pigment.
The installation, which consists of 16 blocks of Northumbrian sandstone, was presented by the artist as a work for a competition at the Venice Biennale in 1990. Being officially a citizen of India, Anish Kapoor represented Britain at the forum; that defined the theme of the work, demonstrating the unification of the eastern and western cultures. In each stone block, the sculptor made a small hole, which he filled with dark blue pigment powder. This original method got many different interpretations, ranging from the idea of combining earth and sky and ending with the mother’s bosom. The work aroused keen interest and a lot of discussion among visitors and members of the jury; as a result, its author received the Premio Duemila prize.
