Adieu Ammenotep

author

Leonora Carrington

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: Galeria de Arte Mexicano (Mexico, Mexico).

The heroes of the canvas are performing some magic operation with Ammenotep floating in the air. The pharaoh was the first monotheistic ruler who, according to Carrington, became the founder of the patriarchal society, pushing the feminine principle deep into the shadows. Mysterious doctors or alchemists uncovered the king’s body, inside of which there is a lotus flower; they are trying to remove a certain object – the mythical “root of evil”. Priestesses perform the operation under the gaze of men who have gathered at the gallery, but are not allowed to participate in the process. At the same time someone uninvited and unknown looks into the window.
