A variation on the theme of Gauguin

Location: The Kyiv Museum Fund of the “Art Arsenal” (Ukraine).

The viewer can see a flat and mountainous terrain with lush vegetation under expressively swirling clouds in a sky looking like a rainbow. Following such a feature of Gauguin’s work as the creation of a new reality in paintings where colour plays the leading role, Palmov deliberately avoided shadows. As a result, the picture should acquire flatness; however, the master, manipulating the gamut of shades, conveyed the depth of space. Unlike Gauguin, in whose landscapes a person is absent, Palmov added a barely distinguishable figure of a peasant cultivating a piece of land near a small lake into the canvas with characteristic colour transitions, including multiple shades of red.
