Filla painted this picture in a period when he was fond of Impressionism. It depicts a man with a raised head, resembling Dostoevsky himself. The man is on the background of a wall with a cross. His face expresses heavy impressions of the book he read. It seems that the whole work is filled with oppressive atmosphere.
