A dog barking at the moon

author

Joan Miró i Ferrà

description

Mediums: oil, plywood.
Location: The Museum of Art (Philadelphia, the USA).

Surrealistic work, entirely consistent with the canons of the style. To create the painting, Miro drew inspiration from his childhood memories, when the night was sometimes presented with riddles and dark secrets. The picture is deprived of numerous details and created in an extremely simplified manner, where the image of the dog resembles a child’s drawing. The dark palette, uncharacteristic for the artist, conveys a feeling of loneliness and longing. The staircase occupying the entire left side of the canvas is a repeating object in the artist’s work. It symbolizes an escape from reality and the ability to throw away the burden of one’s subconscious.
