This picture depicts a scene at a nightclub in Paris. The club initially belonged to composer Emmanuel Chabrier, one of Manet’s neighbors. The painting is an example of Manet’s Realism and his commitment to a detailed presentation of the modern scene. The artist was able to portray the bartender’s feeling of extreme loneliness amongst the swath of food, drinks and smoke from the patrons of the bar, who were watching an acrobat.
