This painting is created using the technique of frottage, which became an attribute of surrealistic art thanks to Max Ernst, who invented this method in 1925. The random results that were obtained with the use of frotting perfectly suited Penrose, as he liked to experiment with the shape and texture of objects in his works. Concerning the plot of the painting, it is quite fantastic and mysterious. The center of the composition is occupied by a large ball, in the area of which the frottage technique was used, giving the canvas a resemblance to the lunar surface. Inside the ball is a hole leading the viewer inside the painting, and perhaps being a kind of portal between different worlds.
