Motherhood

author

Joan Miró i Ferrà

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: The National Gallery of Art of Scotland (Edinburgh).

This painting impresses you with its exquisite simplicity and special laconicism. It expresses the artist’s transition to non-figurative painting, in which real objects turn into geometric shapes, lines and spots. For the first time, Miro used one of his favourite techniques – depicting contrasting details. On the canvas, large and tiny objects located on an empty monophonic background come into contact with each other and create a strange but attractive harmony. According to the artist himself, he created such works completely spontaneously, simply allowing the paints and forms to find their place on the canvas themselves.
