The painting was created in the Golden Period of Klimt’s work – when the artist was fond of Byzantine ornaments. According to the legend, a portrait was ordered by a count that asked to depict him with his beloved one. Working on the picture, Klimt himself fell in love with the girl and obviously depicted near her not the count, but himself. Others suggest that here is an artist with his beloved Emilie Floge.
