The picture is 1024 squares painted in different colours. To create such an unusual composition, Richter used a standardized colour matching system developed by the American company Pantone Inc. in the middle of the 20th century. The program determined the correlation of colours in the composition, and the role of the artist was reduced only to the mechanical filling of squares and the choice of canvas sizes. This approach to creativity was appreciated by critics and spectators in different ways: some grasped the highest harmony in Richter’s unusual method, while others refused to perceive this work as fine art.
