Post-Minimalism

Post-minimalism

Post-minimalism is an art movement that originated in the second half of the twentieth century as a desire to continue the concept of Minimalism. The term was finally rooted in the early 1970s.

The term was introduced (presumably in 1971) by American art critic Robert Pincus-Witten after a 1966 review of the Eccentric Abstraction exhibition organized by Lucy Lippard in New York.

Post-minimalism exists in the form of painting, design, sculpture, installation and performance. Masters use various media: stones, bricks, old wallpapers, papier-mâché, boards, canvases, glass, metal, whole trees, rooms and houses. Media can be both individual and ready-made; some artists rejected the use of finished materials; others are busy looking for new ones – latex, chain-link, rope, etc. A person can also be a part of the artist’s work. One of the ways to create works was random processes. Some installations have a chaotic appearance and scattered objects as if they were scattered by the shock wave after the explosion.

Similar art movements: Minimalism, Neodada, Conceptualism, Abstractionism.

Key ideas:

– Post-minimalism is based on the principles of Minimalism while remaining committed to formal simplicity; however, it fills the art with broader semantic content.

– Post-minimalism, striving to create non-representativeness, explores what exactly the exerting action consists of, whether the physical object is filled with semantic value, or the understanding of the concept is connected with the specificity of the consciousness of each person.
